About Us Intro
Purps Produce is an urban farm based out of Winnipeg, MB founded in 2016. We specialize in providing a variety of gourmet medicinal mushrooms, teas and offer various home cultivation products to help with your food security such as grow kits, garden boxes and food dehydrators.
Mushrooms have been used to treat infection for hundreds of years, mostly in Asia. Today, medicinal mushrooms are also used to treat lung diseases and cancer, improve nerve growth digestive issues and much more. For more than 30 years, medicinal mushrooms have been approved as an addition to standard cancer treatments in Japan and China. Also Penecilin, the world famous antibiotic comes from fungi, so it is important to take the health benefits claims of mushrooms seriously and not some quack self improvement scheme that is all too popular and phony today. This is the real deal.
Unfortunately, our medical system here sees us more as customers, curing is not the goal, if people are not sick then they are not making money and pharmaceuitcal companies don't use natural medicines because they cant put a patent on nature, therefore can't "own" it and sell it at a high price. Nature does everything best and has been around for forever to evolved with itself, for better or for worse. Certain chemicals created by plants, fungi and bacteria are meant to protect themselves from each other. Fungi are the closer related to animals than any other kingdom of life so it is no surprise that the compounds they create are beneficial to us.
Below is a very quick list of benefits of the mushrooms we carry. The list is not extensive but just meant for a quick glance reference. For more in depth annalysis please check the blog posts.
Also **Important** to know is most other companies mix their mushroom powder with al kinds of fillers and then try to hide that they do this with misleading wording and labeling. Purps Produce powders are 100% from the mushroom fruiting body with NO FILLERS.

By sharing what we are able to grow to utilize our own urban space, we hope to inspire thought about what sourcing your own food might begin to resemble. Our journey of self-sustainability has involved converting a front yard lawn into a flourishing garden, equipping a spare room to grow microgreens, and establishing an entire mushroom cultivation operation in a relatively small area. These effective setups that make use of otherwise wasted space provide an abundance of food to sell and enjoy throughout the year. All unused produce is then donated to local charitable organizations, exceeding 500 pounds in 2020.
Urban gardening and self sustainability is attainable and will continue to become a norm as issues with the consumers dependency on large scale industrialized farming practices continue to arise. Our current industrial farming methods have wreaked havoc on our environment and health. These nutrient deficient crops that rely on synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and fungicides in order to operate, kills the soils living microbiology, and pollutes the land and water. There are better ways, and we hope to offer products and inspiration to help fight this battle to achieve a more sustainable future.
Fungi also provide massive roles in keeping the balance in nature. They connect most plant/tree life roots to one another, exchanging information and nutrients in some kind of internet like communication trade network, as well as break down dead carbon based material back into soil. If there were no fungi, then there would be miles upon miles of build up of dead trees and plant material. All life on Earth would be a completely different geographically as well as biologically. This should make you look at your moldy bread with a little more appreciation.
